It is really good news that free software is used in CERN for the Large Hadron Collider, however, when trying to access anything to do with https://www.scientificlinux.org/ using Firefox 3.0.1, all I see is:
Secure Connection Failed
www.scientificlinux.org uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is not trusted because the issuer certificate is unknown.
(Error code: sec_error_unknown_issuer)
Which looks like a bad advertisement for the free software community!
Forums:
FireFox 3 is insane
FireFox 3 has a really bad policy when it comes to self signed certs.
Google for firefox 3 and self signed certs to find all kinds of blogs and rants.
Basically - FireFox lies and tells the user the certificate is invalid. It's not invalid, it's just not signed by a CA. FireFox then makes you go through hoops to actually accept the certificate permanently.
The problem is FireFox - not Scientific Linux.
indeed
indeed you'll find something about Firefox' handling of self-signed certificates here on FSM: self signed certificates and firefox 3 a possible solution
