Where is fsdaily?

Sun, 2005-11-27 09:59 -- admin

You may have noticed that fsdaily.com is redirected to www.freesoftwaremagazine.com.

The answer is simple: at the moment, we don't have the resources to run it.

On one hand, I am talking about hardware resources: we spent quite a while configuring the site using Slash (which is great for creating communities). However, Slash itself used a lot of CPU and RAM—and we simply couldn't afford it.

On the other hand, after running it for only a short while we realised that it wasn't only a hardware problem: fsdaily.com overloaded us, and took time away from our core focus: Free Software Magazine.

Why did we decide to effectively kill fsdaily.com so quickly? After all, the site wasn't doing badly at all. A lot of people were accessing it, and the traffic was growing. This was exactly the problem: as soon as we realised that we effectively couldn't afford to run fsdaily.com, we stopped it—before too many people had left valuable comments on it, and had invested much of their time reading it.

So, please accept our apologies for not being able to continue with fsdaily.com. At the same time, rest assured that all the time we don't spend on fsdaily.com will be spent making Free Software Magazine the best magazine that we can.

Thank you!

I was wondering where fsdaily had gone and noticed the redirect earlier today. Hopefully, you will be able to do something in a similar fashion in the future.

It was fun while it lasted!

Hmm. That's too bad.

I can't disagree though, I know I couldn't find enough time to post much of anything.

If you cannot do it, why you cannot let us do it? Rerun it as digg.com type website, and we will see...

two problems here:

* Writing a "digg.com-style" site takes a _lot_ of time and a _lot_ of resources. A piece of software that does what digg.com does (that is, allows people to "digg" stories etc.) doesn't currently exist

* The required resources to run something like that are _huge_. I am talking about bandwidth, CPU, RAM, etc.

I was also wondering where fsdaily was gone. I am using firefox live bookmarks, and it just kept saying "failed to load live bookmarks", so I did not know what happened until I read this.

Well, bad news, good news. Who knows? [ref.]
Maybe the sole classic freesoftwaremagazine site is better, with no tr, fl and childrens' noise.
