Help yourself

Sooner or later we all decide to try and use our computers to do something new, something we've never done before, something exciting! Then we realise it's not as straightforward as we'd hoped. Luckily with a bit of perseverance you'll figure it out and once you have the feeling of satisfaction is great. Where to start though? This may seem obvious, but on countless occasions many people I know have given up at the first hurdle only to ask me to do it for them. This article is aimed at these people: to help them take their first steps in helping themselves.

Command line media editing

This last week I've been trying my hand at a bit of DVD authoring and I thought I'd pass on everything that I've found out! A couple of the most useful tools are command line based, hence the title, but I'm also going to talk about a fantastic GUI that brings these bits and pieces together. To my horror, just as I sat down to write this I discovered Mitch Meyran had just posted a very similar blog entry! This post, however, is a bit more command line based and HOWTO-like in structure.

Free software vs open source

I heard that the open source software movement grew up when it was noticed that people reacted badly to the idealism that the phrase “free software” suggests. In an attempt to attract more people to free software they decided to move away from the ideas implicit in the term “free software” and use their own term “open source” which promotes the practical benefits of this style of development.

What are you optimistic about?!

I’ve been really lucky today: I was trying to decide what to write about in this post and all sorts of ideas crossed my mind ranging from making regular back-ups (yes, my website went down this weekend when I attempted to upgrade Drupal without making a back-up first!) to the recent report by the European Commission into the contribution of free software to the European economy. Then I opened up my newspaper this morning and found that they had a feature entitled What are you optimistic about? and it gave me the inspiration I was looking for!
